e& UAE strengthened the digital infrastructure of the country by deploying Ciena WaveLogic 6 Extreme across its optical networks. e& UAE is the first telecommunications provider in the Middle East to deploy the high-capacity solution.
This upgrade allows data transmission speeds up to 1.6 Terabits per Second on a single wavelength. The operator can now transmit twice as much data without having to expand its network. This technology will help e& UAE meet the growing demand for faster and more reliable connectivity.
Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme Platform uses three-nanometer silicon technology to provide ultra-high-speed client connectivity at 400G speeds. The upgraded infrastructure, according to the announcement will support e& UAE’s 10-gigabit services as well as meet the connectivity needs of domestic and wholesale customers.
This deployment will also improve the infrastructure that supports the 5G services of the operator. In an era where consumers and businesses are increasingly using cloud applications, video platforms and connected devices, as well as data-intensive digital service, optical transport networks will need to carry much more traffic, while still maintaining low latency.
Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), also known as DWDM or DWDM for short, allows different wavelengths of data to be sent through one optical fibre. This technology allows operators to increase capacity without having to install separate fibre connections for each service.
Supporting artificial intelligence infrastructure is another major focus for e& UAE’s network development. AI data centres and high performance computing environments need fast, stable connections that can transfer large datasets. The increased optical capacity will help operators meet these needs while also supporting future AI products and services.
The power-efficient architecture of the technology may also help e& UAE expand its network sustainably. Increased capacity in the existing infrastructure could reduce the need for additional equipment, space, and energy to handle increasing traffic volumes.
Abdulrahman Al Humaidan is Senior Vice President at e& UAE’s Access Network Department. He described the introduction of 1.6T lines as a natural next step in the network transformation of the company. He said that the deployment will help to ensure seamless connectivity of existing digital services, while preparing for future AI applications.
Ciena’s leadership in the region also highlights the growing demand for 5G connectivity, cloud services and advanced digital infrastructure throughout the Middle East and Africa. WaveLogic 6 Extreme will give e& UAE a greater capacity to support the region’s growing digital economy and serve its customers.
The deployment is part of e& UAE’s broader strategy to develop an AI-ready, scalable, and energy-efficient telecommunications infrastructure. The operator’s strategy of increasing optical capacity, and improving infrastructure performance is geared towards supporting the UAE in its next phase of digitalization.
